For more than 100 years, Summit Dog and Cat Hospital has been part of the Summit, NJ community.
Our hospital has cared for local pets and families for generations. Today, we remain a family-owned and operated veterinary hospital, and we’re proud to continue serving the dogs, cats, and people who make Summit and the surrounding communities home.
Community involvement isn’t something we created as a marketing program. Over the years, our team has helped veterans care for their pets, supported community cat and TNR efforts, connected donated pet food with local organizations, and created opportunities for our clients and their pets to celebrate together.
We’re sharing that work here so our community can understand what we do, who these programs are intended to help, and how they work.
Each program has its own requirements, partnerships, and available resources. Please read the appropriate page first to understand who the program is intended to help and how the process works.
Through participating veteran assistance programs and referrals, eligible veterans may receive veterinary support for their pets. This is a referral-based program, not a public free veterinary service.
We support responsible Trap-Neuter-Return efforts for outdoor and community cats, by appointment, working with nonprofits, rescues and colony caregivers.
When donated pet food and supplies are available, we work with local organizations to connect those resources with people and families who need them.
Being part of the community also means celebrating the relationships we build with the families who trust us with their pets. Throughout the year, we host invitation-only events for our clients and their pets.
A free, invitation-only celebration featuring games, prizes, and food for people and pets.
Costumes, a costume contest with prizes, food, and goodie bags for invited clients and their pets.
Photos with the Easter Bunny, an egg hunt, prizes, gifts, and food for the whole family.
Santa and Mrs. Claus join us for photos, gifts, festive food, and desserts.
Costume character photos, cotton candy, popcorn, baked goods, and goodie bags.
These gatherings give our team and our clients an opportunity to spend time together outside the veterinary exam room and celebrate the pets who bring us together.

These programs are not general free veterinary services and are not open public assistance programs.
We’ve been caring for pets in Summit for generations. Our goal has always been straightforward: provide thoughtful veterinary care, communicate honestly with pet owners, and remain part of the community we serve.
That’s what community impact means to us. It’s not a slogan. It’s the work we do, the relationships we’ve built, and the pets we’ve cared for over the decades.
In July 2024, News 12 New Jersey featured the rescue of five pit bulls found neglected on an abandoned property in Irvington. Local rescuers got the dogs into care, and our team treated them here at Summit Dog and Cat Hospital: spay and neuter surgery, vaccinations, and medication as needed.
