Dog and Cat Hospital

Exotic Pet Veterinarian in Summit, NJ

Wellness exams, dental care and sick visits for rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles and other exotic pets.

Why Exotic Pets Need Routine Veterinary Care

Rabbits, guinea pigs and birds are prey animals, so they hide signs of illness until a problem is advanced. Rabbits and guinea pigs have teeth that never stop growing and can develop painful dental disease without the right diet and regular checks. Small changes in appetite, weight or droppings are often the first warning signs.

Housing and diet matter just as much as medicine. Birds need cages large enough to move and climb, with safe perches. Reptiles need the right heat, lighting and humidity, and diets range from leafy greens to insects or whole prey. Our team reviews your pet’s diet, enclosure and daily routine at every visit and recommends practical changes.

Exotic pet care at Summit Dog and Cat Hospital is led by Dr. Alina Tsavera, DVM, a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine with a special interest in exotic animals. We care for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small rodents, birds, reptiles and other nontraditional pets.

Most exotic pets should have a wellness exam every 6 to 12 months. Each visit includes a full physical exam, weight check, dental exam and a review of diet and housing, with lab tests when they are needed. We also provide vaccinations when the species needs them, and spay and neuter surgery when recommended; for female rabbits, spaying lowers the risk of uterine cancer, which is common in unspayed rabbits. When your pet is sick or injured, call us at (908) 273-2200. A rabbit or guinea pig that stops eating or passing droppings, or a bird sitting fluffed up on the cage floor, should be seen the same day.

Reptiles need correct heat, lighting and humidity. Watch appetite and droppings every day; a rabbit or guinea pig that stops eating or passing droppings needs to be seen the same day.
